Did you know that Pakistan has its own beauty pageant titled “Miss Pakistan World”? Well, if you are as surprised as I am, read on to know all the juicy tidbits about it.
The event itself has been running since 2002 and, due to the controversial nature of these pageants in our country,is hosted in Canada to avoid any issues raised. Aside from that, it is the only beauty pageant “in Pakistan” (if you can call it that) that is internationally recognized. Girls living in Pakistan or any Pakistani citizen abroad can participate in it which is a huge opportunity because it is a platform which provides international recognition and fame to those who want to step into the glittering world of modeling and glamour.
The winners of these pageants then go on to compete in Miss Earth despite the fact that it is called Miss Pakistan Universe (yeah, we don’t get it either). The event itself is held on a grand scale every year with participants from all over the world competing for the most coveted title with the first Miss Pakistan World to be crowned being Ms.Zehra Sheerazi.
So it all sounds fun and glamorous right? Wrong!
The pageant, like many others, too has its fair share of controversies. One of them being… wait for it… a strong statement by one of the former contestants on her fancy for Mr. Pervaiz Musharraf. If that isn’t enough to get a few tongues wagging, here’s some more: the pageant itself has faced a lot of flak from the feminist in Pakistan who believe that it stands for everything that they oppose. Not only that, in 2010, the pageant was held during the month of Ramadan and in the times of the flood in Pakistan, which did not help in garnering positive publicity for the pageant.
Well, what we’d like to say is, all is fair and in love and war… and for the contestants that participate in these pageants every year, it truly is!
